Who news

I'm sure Danny's aready seen it but anyone who enjoyed the new version of Doctor Who (which should be everyone who saw it) should follow this.
A quick look at some of my manga books in reference for the posibilities mentioned in the previous post has reminded me of the joys of Junko Muzuno,I've got her version of Cinderalla but might have to treat myself to some more of her stuff (might throw in Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freakshow in for too as I've been promising it for myself for ages now). Anyone who likes weird quirky macabre manga (Hideshi 'Hellbaby' Hino or Junji 'Uzamaki' Ito being excellent examples) should check her out. I also found out that manga horror God Kazuo Umezu's getting a decent english language release in a few months time which is great news - Japanese horror lovers will be wetting themselves with excitement.

I believe the word I'm looking for is 'stoked'!!

Pretty amazing isn't it.

And they kept it so quiet!!! Not a word before today, anywhere... Although I'm avoiding all the spoilers sites with Who like the plague.

Like the last fella said... Fantastic!

I saw that. I'm quite reserved - a little worried they may ruin such a good start with Who.

The other Junko Mizuno stuff has never interested me, but I lack much decent Anime, so maybe I should be a little more adventurous.

Still haven't got Uzumaki the manga yet and I've been dying to for ages... Luckily the Borders in Cambridge still stocks Hino so I can maintain that habit!

I kind of see what you're saying about Torchwood, Gopher, and yeah, we've not seen any of it yet, but I am very optimistic about it. I'm more inclined to trust this lot with the idea than anyone else, going by the last series of Who...

True, but I find sometimes people push a concept too far sometimes and it goes the wrong way (The Matrix being one obvious example).

I think it's alittle early to worry about pushing the Who concept (and to go as far as bring the Matrix up! Shudder). Torchwood doesn't really have much to do with Who beyond being set in the same 'universe' (let's avoid 'whoniverse!) and having a character from it. Beyond that it's just scifi telly being created by a very good writer and his very good time. I'll be avoiding spoilers too.

Didn't enjoy the original Matrix then? Or was it simply the sequals that ruined it?

Gopher said...

See I read the original scripts for all three and the scripts sounded excellent. Unfortunately Warner decided they didn't like the original scripts and had the brothers change them to make them more Hollywood...

First Matrix was good fun, though the whole ripping off the 'Invisibles' is a bit shit. Saw the 2nd, was appalled and have done my best to forget it ever existed - and can't understand why it did, what is this need for trilogys?

Gopher said...

Wasn't meant to be. The idea was 2 films, but Warner preferred the trilogy idea.

I have the whole collection including the Animatrix because as a set I enjoy them (having studied the related philosophy and religions behind it for many years).

However, Reloaded and Revolutions have been completly ruined from the original concept. They're just cringe-worthy Hollywood crap.

Enigma did the original theme-tune for The Matrix, but pulled out before the cinema release... *Prepares for a slating*

I'm all Enigma-ed out
As far as The Matrix goes not having read the scripts I can't really comment. All the Matrix talk reminds me how scared I am at the V For Vendetta adaptation, one of my favourite books at the hands of idiots who claim understanding as the ruin it.

You're talking about Joel Silver or Warner Brother's generally? I've never read the original although I heard it is excellent. Another recommended read then?

Warner Brother's will generally ruin anything they get their hands on in my opinion so I would be worried.

No the Wachowsi brothers wrote the script for 'V For Vendetta' and the DP (I think) of The Matrix is directing (although they had originally wanted to) and frankly I just don't rate them. Perhaps it's because of the duff sequels but as much as initially loved The Matrix I've found it pretty underwhelming on later viewings and featuring much of the stuff I hated about the 2nd one. What I've seen of the original script they wrote for Vendetta is awful and as these things tend to be better in script form before 'many hands' take over (and, again, what I've seen in advance reporting back this up) I've given up hope. The fact that Alan Moore disowned the project (he'd already decided to have his name removed from any adaptations of his work and refused money simply asking that his share goes to the artists he'd worked with) after reading the script and then Silver (and the brothers) talked about Moore loving what they'd done causing him to ask for a public retraction just makes it even worse. But then this is Hollywood, they don't respect authors (Mel Gibson famously couldn't remember the name of the authors of Lethal Weapon 3 (or maybe 4?) when asked at the opening), why should they respect ones that write comics?!
'V For Vendetta' is one of Moore's finest comics (the other being Halo Jones - although he's done quite a fewe amazing reads) which is saying something. As far as I'm concerned anyone who claims even a small amount of interest in comics should own it, as should people who just like stories in any medium.
